Open Call#4. Development of methodological tool kits for sensorial quality assessment of berry genetic resources
From 27 to 29 February took place at CNR in Bologna the final part of Open Call#4 in the context of Breeding Value European Project.
Four Open Calls were launched to involve and interact with the breeding community that is fundamental for the success of the project.
The objective of Open Call#4 was to involve European berry breeders and companies willing to develop their skills and knowledge to exploit sensory-quality evaluation of berries (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry) by using professional, coordinated and scientifically sound methodology. This can help in improving and speeding up the breeding project phases closest to market.
First part of this open call took place in Maggio 2022 at IBE-CNR and focused on sensory evaluation methods. The last part took place on 27-29 February 2024 and focused on advanced methods applied to consumer tests useful for identifying preference drivers to foster the selection of pre-commercial breeding material and provide tools for decision-making about cultivar release. The participants were shown how to perform consumers tests, the elaboration and visualization of consumer data, and practical simulation with jamovi software, a free and open-source computer program for data analysis and performing statistical tests. Thus, they gained practical experience in planning and implementing consumer tests to assess hedonic appreciation and in combining and interpreting sensory and preference data.
Open Call #4 was coordinated by the Italian National Research Council: Institute of BioEconomy (CNR-IBE).
